christmas 2008

Four and a half seconds... all that separated the Big Red lacrosse team from the national championship. Change any one of a dozen things, and the gold trophy is heading to Ithaca. But no. Syracuse took it in overtime, 10-9, after Cornell led or was even the entire game. After consulting the Sports Guy's Levels of Losing, I rate this one at Level III - "The Guillotine." Even up three, I knew a charge would come. Once the Orange got within one and Cornell couldn't win a faceoff, I got really scared, because I've seen Big Red teams come up short more often than not. But Cornell got the ball back, then gave it away, then deflected a pass...right into a Syracuse attackman's stick, who tied it. Overtime seemed like nothing more than a formality, and it ended up being just that. Despite the disappointment, it was a great run for the team, and a great ride for the fans - both represented themselves well at the "Fastest Four." I'm personally pleased that I was along, because it got me thinking about and following lacrosse again, after several years of it being on the back burner.

I didn't have much time to dwell on the loss, because I needed to do laundry. A full set of clean clothes is essential, because I am packing, sporadically as it may be. In just about twelve hours, the Post-Navy Roadtrip gets underway. I'm psyched and ready. It's going to be a blast. The forecast calls for rain on the opening day, but I still intend to make a lot of headway. Now back to that packing...
