Forty-Six Years of Star Trek

Yesterday was the 46th anniversary of the first network airing of the original Star Trek series. Caitlin reblogged her own Tumblr post from last year toasting the cast of each of the series (well, she got most of them in there).

But I realized that's only half the story. Without the guest stars and adversary races, the franchise would be a shadow of what it has become. So I added my own toast. I've lost count of how many edits I've made (I think at least seven), and I'm undoubtedly leaving things out, not least because of my knowledge bias toward TNG and DS9.
To the Klingons and Romulans. Kor, Koloth and Kang. The Organians. T’Pring, Stonn, and pon farr. Edith Keeler and Gary Seven. The Tribbles. The Tholians. Khan Noonien Singh - I mean, KHAAAAAAN! David and Carol Marcus. Commander Kruge and General Chang. Chancellor Gorkon and Valeris.

To Tasha Yar. Q. The Ferengi. Guinan. Commander Bruce Maddox. Captain Rachel Garrett. Kurn. Duras. K’Ehleyr. Alexander Rohzenko. Chancellor Gowron. Captain Jellico and Gul Madred (“THERE. ARE. FOUR. LIGHTS!!”) Wesley Crusher and The Traveler. Vash. Tolian Soran. Lursa and B’Etor. Zefram Cochrane and Lily Sloane. The Son’a and Admiral Dougherty. Shinzon.

To Jake Sisko. Jadzia AND Ezri Dax. The Bajorans. The Prophets. The Maquis. The Dominion. The Founders. The Jem’Hadar. The Vorta. Rom, Nog, and Leeta. Ishka and Grand Nagus Zek. Garak - plain, simple Garak. Tora Ziyal. Shakaar and Vedek Bareil. Joseph Sisko. Kasidy Yates. Admiral Ross. Section 31. Vic Fontaine. Liquidator Brunt, FCA. Weyoun. Damar. General Martok. Kai Winn. And of course, to Gul Dukat, who literally burns for eternity in the Fire Caves.

To the Caretaker and Suspiria. The Kazon. The Vidiians. The Haakonians. Amelia Earhart and the ’37s. Seska. Lon Suder. Henry Starling. Species 8472. The Krenim. The Hirogen. Captain Rudolph Ransom and the crew of the USS Equinox. Captain Proton. Icheb and the other children.

To Klaang. Admiral Forrest. Ambassador Soval. Silik and the Suliban. Shran. The Xindi - all six kinds. The Na’kuhl, and Nazis on American soil. Syrran. Arik Soong, the Augments, and explaining the non-ridged Klingons. John Frederick Paxton.

Last but not least, here’s to the Borg. They will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to their own. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
It's been reported that next year's sequel, the second in the alternate reality, will be titled Star Trek Into Darkness. As much as I would like to have seen more done with the main timeline, I'm still very much looking forward to the new movie.
