By a 7-1 vote, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission overturned the Department of Defense's recommendation to close Naval Submarine Base New London. If not for the mandatory urinalysis program in the Navy, I would say the top brass were on crack for recommending Groton's closure at all. There were more than enough reasons for the Commission to lay the smack down - Groton's position as a "center of excellence" for the submarine community; its synergies with nearby submarine builder Electric Boat; the fact that closing it and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (which was also spared) would leave the Northeast nearly devoid of active duty military; and most importantly, that the Navy criminally underestimated the costs of the closure, and overestimated the potential savings. I'm mainly happy because it means I won't have to move again before I leave the Navy. That said, tvisgod makes an excellent point, one worth quoting: "maybe at some point people will actually work together on weaning the town off of one source of income and onto another."
The fly-out date has been moved up a day, to August 31.
Today I saw "The 40 Year-Old Virgin". It was awesome. And on top of that, I waited half an hour to see it due to a projector problem - so I got my money refunded, and a free pass for another movie. Good times.
