Some notes on hockey

I am sitting here watching game four of the Stanley Cup final. Some high-quality hockey being played in Canada's capital. Ottawa has come strong it its attempt to even the series, but despite having an overwhelming edge in shots on goal and scoring chances, the Senators had not been able to solve Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere - until Alfredsson's score with three-tenths of a second left in the first.

Tonight, the NHL brought Canadian pop/rock star Alanis Morrisette to Scotiabank Place to sing the national anthems. She performed adequately, but her renditions paled in comparison to those of Lyndon Slewidge, Ottawa's house singer, prior to game three. As he sang "O Canada," a giant Canadian flag was unfurled across the arena's upper deck, and the 20,500 fans were in perfect tune with the Ontario Provincial Police constable. Tonight at dinner, my mom, who watched Saturday night's game in Vermont on Canada's TSN, said she cried. They brought the flag again tonight, but it just wasn't the same. I'd call it one of the great anthems I've heard - right up there with Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XXV, and Beyoncé at Super Bowl XXXVIII.
